It was also clear when my students had a breakdown in understanding so I could go back and re-teach if needed. In addition, the easy to use lesson structure really worked for my 5 th grade team and we saw students really getting it! The gradual release format of the lessons allowed for clear modeling and guiding student learning and the independent practice allowed my students to show they understood the skills. It has given me a way to easily find the targeted practice passages that my students need to work on comprehension and questioning skills. ReadWorks has been a valuable resource for my students and me. The ReadWorks lessons have been a great model for me to write out the what and how I will teach, including the specific questions to ask my students and what I will say during the lesson. I now write out my own lessons, using ReadWorks as the model. ReadWorks also saves me tons of planning time! I really like that within the lessons I find specific wording and instructional techniques that I can easily emulate. If my students are struggling and have not achieved the standard yet, there are other resources that will meet them where they are at and move them up the ladder, and it all ties together! It is one of the few resources I have found that helped me to create Common Core lessons for my classroom - rigorous effective lessons, not just fluff!!! I really love how the units clearly tie together, that I can see the progression of skills and consult with the site in terms of where my students should be.

I always look at ReadWorks as part of my planning and I know I can easily put the lessons into practice. ReadWorks is an incredibly reliable website and the content has been invaluable! The books ReadWorks recommends are really engaging and enjoyable for my kids and they have been easy to find. In addition, our teachers have been able to provide their students with many more opportunities to read texts at their independent or instructional level by using ReadWorks passages throughout the course of the day.ĭOMINIQUE, 3rd GRADE LITERACY TEACHER, NC The gradual release lesson structure has been shared across our school network extending planning and guidance for research-based reading comprehension instruction to many more teachers. ReadWorks has been a wonderful resource for the teachers in our network of schools, particularly because we have lots of new teachers with less experience, who are working with students that are very far behind their peers.Īs a former teacher and now Director of Curriculum and Instruction (K-2), I have used ReadWorks lessons so often that I can script out my own lessons using the gradual release lesson model. Whether a person is new to teaching or has been teaching for years, ReadWorks offers valuable lessons and content.

Teachers can use the lessons right away in their classrooms, and in the process of doing so, are learning how to explicitly teach comprehension. ReadWorks is such a great reading comprehension resource. Reading comprehension is a completely different story. When teachers are teaching math there is a clear plan for instruction. MAIRIN, DIRECTOR OF CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION (PK-2), LA They are very high quality lessons, grade appropriate, explicitly written, easy to follow and have saved me so much time! While I create a lot of new lessons on my own, I am grateful for ReadWorks lessons. My colleagues and I have been creating everything on our own since North Carolina adopted the Common Core, so ReadWorks has been invaluable. They are a very robust instructional resource allowing me to maximize my instruction. I really love that the passages and question sets cover multiple standards. I took the ten questions, and instructed my classes using some of the questions and used the remainder of the questions from the question set to assign for homework. I used the multi-skill and strategy passage on bullying - and loved that both the passage and question set covered a variety of skills. I can easily differentiate with the varied types and levels of passages offered. My students love the wide variety of high interest topics and I appreciate that there is a wide variety of non-fiction to choose from. I also use the non-fiction reading passages and question sets as part of lessons, quizzes, and homework. I love the easy to use book based skill and strategy lessons and use them in the fall and then over the course of the year as needed to reinforce, review and practice. However, in the fall my third graders often lack basic comprehension skills. I believe strongly in moving kids to a multi-skill approach to reading comprehension as soon as possible. ReadWorks lessons and books match up with our student levels, the Common Core, and there is so much content to choose from! MARY, CURRICULUM TECHNOLOGY COORDINATOR, NC
